messy storage locker, how to organize your packing tipsNow that you have decided to pack up and store the more organized your approach to packing those materials the better.

Regardless if you are storing things from you home or office, short or long term storage, planning ahead will help you to avoid damage to your stuff, help you to be able to find and access your things when you want to.

You need a plan, otherwise your storage unit will look like it was packed by a tornado.

The Plan

Knowing What You Have & Want To Store.

  • Gather the things that you are wanting to store.
  • Organize those materials into like or predictable groups. For example you have Christmas Decorations and years of kids memorabilia, organize those like things together in groups so when its time to pack up it will be simple and easy to pack your materials in predictable way.  Organizing your materials will help you in the future to know what is where without a lot of guess work or digging.
  • If you are packing for long term but will need access to some materials but not others keep this in mind as well as you might want to in the next phase purchase different types of storage containers. IE, regular boxes for things that you don’t plan to access vs. plastic tote containers for the things that you want to re-access later. Results: Now that you have gathered the things that you would like to store, this will help to know how many boxes you will need, you will also have a better idea of the size of storage unit which will accommodate your stuff.

Gathering Your Packing Materials

  • packing kitNow that you know the quantity of stuff, you can purchase the right size and type of boxes and storage containers that you will need. Example: extra clothes, a wardrobe box will keep your clothes in shape, important papers there are specialty boxes with removable lids you can get at your local office supply place, Christmas decorations, plastic totes with handles are great for this.
  • Delicate things? Make sure you don’t forget about bubble wrap, wrapping papers etc to protect those elements.
  • Put together your packing kit. Have scissors tape, markers maybe even a labeler and a note pad. Put these materials in a tote bag so you can take it with you while you pack. Maybe even make a second packing kit to leave inside your storage unit too.

Order Your Storage Unit And Organizing

  • Keep in mind when picking a storage unit that if you plan on accessing your things or storaging additional materials in the future you want to leave room and be able to have paths to your boxes.
  • Purchase a secure lock if needed to secure your storage locker if needed.
  • Purchase a clipboard with a pad, some hooks or those detatchable hooks with glue backs if you are not allowed to nail within your storage locker.Tip: when you lable and number your boxes and begin to storage them keep a list of the boxes their content summary (ex> Ski wear) and a drawn diagram of where that box is.  You can even create a number system and storage order. Write this all down on your clipboard and keep it in the inside front of your unit this will help you know whats where, but also allow you to have a list (make a copy) to keep outside of your unit should anything happen.
  • Spacking boxestoraging office documents and records? If you will be having to access those materials you might want to consider buying some portable shelving units for the inside of your locker. This will help you keep organized, make it easier to access boxes and allow airflow around your materials.
  • If you have long term storage of things like clothing, papers but don’t want to purchase shelving, you also might want to consider purchasing a pallet. A pallett helps improve the air circulation around your materials and within your storage locker.
  • Prepair your space if you are using portable shelving. This will help you time wize when moving your stuff into your locker as it will be good to go, your clipboard and packing kit will be ready and it will make the storaging process way smoother for you.

Having a plan and taking the steps before you pack and store your materials in their new home at Ridge Road Mini Storage in Lafayette you will

  • Save yourself time because you will know what materials you will need, where and how to pack & storage them and where to find those elements in the future.
  • You will save money because by knowing what you have to pack you can avoid purchasing too many boxes and/or ordering the correct unit size at the beginning instead of over buying. (you can always upgrade)
  • Organized and know what you have. After the passing of time it is easy to forget what’s where and exactly what you stored, by keeping a packing list, and the locker inventory you will know exactly what you packed and where it is.

Now that you have taken the time and effort to plan what it is that you will need to pack in a organized way the next step is when packing, “How to you pack that?”
